Jürgen Dollase and Stuart Pigott name the 2015 Rüdesheim Drachenstein Pinot Noir Red Wine of the Year:
“At the pinnacle of this impressive range stands the 2015 Pinot Noir from the Drachenstein vineyard in Rüdesheim. Just as spicy as it is seductive with a firm structure, in which mineral acidity and tart tannins are wonderfully interwoven, it is reminiscent of a Burgundian Grand Cru with a correspondingly rich, three-digit euro price tag. The wine is just beginning to provide great pleasure, but its best years are still ahead of it.”

Winery
The Chat Sauvage winery represents an unusual success story in the Rheingau, where Hamburg entrepreneur Günter Schulz realized his dream of producing Burgundy-style wines. What began as a small project with purchased Pinot Noir grapes has developed in recent years into a top-tier winery, now boasting 8.5 hectares of vineyards. Today, Chat Sauvage is known for its elegant and complex Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays, which surprise and delight with their Burgundian finesse. Under the leadership of Verena Schöttle, an experienced winemaker and manager, the estate focuses on intensive manual labor and natural wine production. Each wine matures for up to two years in barriques and is bottled unfiltered, which underscores its complexity and minerality. The standards are high: the wines should not merely be inspired by Burgundy, but rather develop their own identity through terroir and craftsmanship—polished and balanced, the finest representatives of their style in the Rheingau
