The Herdade do Rocim – Grande Rocim DOC Reserva 2009 is an exceptional wine made from the Alicante Bouschet grape variety and was created to be the best wine from Herdade do Rocim. It is bottled only in small quantities and during exceptional years. Deep, intense ruby red, its bouquet of balsamic notes and extremely complex spice aromas, as well as hints of very ripe black fruit, result in a highly concentrated wine with a voluminous mouthfeel and a very long, persistent finish. Ideal for long-term cellaring.

Herdade do Rocim

Herdade do Rocim – This family-run winery was founded in 2000 with a high level of technical investment. The vineyards extend over 70 hectares between the two villages of Vidigueira and Cuba in the Alentejo region of southern Portugal at an altitude of 50–200 m. In 2000, Herdade do Rocim, a renowned Portuguese winery, came into the possession of the Vieira family, merging tradition and a passion for viticulture. This was a gift from a father to his daughter Catarina, who completed her demanding studies as an oenologist and agricultural economist at the prestigious University of Bologna in Italy. This fulfilled her dream of creating an authentic wine culture. Together with Pedro Ribeiro, who also received his education at the Geisenheim Wine University, they transformed the winery with its avant-garde architecture into one of the leading wineries in Portugal. Their shared vision and passion led to them becoming a married couple today. The oenology team of Catarina Vieira and Pedro Ribeiro are responsible for this ambitious project. In addition to first-class Alentejo wines, this also includes a fine Vinho Verde and – as the latest addition – a wine project in the Douro Valley.

  • Geography

The climate is typically Mediterranean in the sub-region of Vidigueira, where the most temperate conditions of the Alentejo prevail, providing an excellent microclimate optimal for the production of quality wines. The land is barren, the soil consists predominantly of granite and slate – excellent soil conditions for the cultivation of wines with a mineral character. The Alentejo region is the breadbasket of Portugal and occupies about one third of the country. In the gently rolling landscape in the south of the country, there is space for countless cork oaks and vineyards alongside grain fields and olive groves. In the hot climate, on fertile soil and in easily cultivated vineyards, juicy red wines are produced that are served by the glass not only in the cafés of Lisbon. Located in the picturesque south of Portugal between Vidigueira and Cuba, Herdade do Rocim tends a total of 120 hectares of land in the fertile Baixo Alentejo growing region, 70 of which are dedicated to fine Portuguese wine and 10 hectares to aromatic olive trees. In 2018, the renowned Portuguese wine magazine "Evasoes" crowned this jewel "Winery of the Year" in Portugal. Its outstanding quality is also reflected in international awards such as in "Wine Enthusiast, Wine and Spirits". These are made from the grape varieties Tempranillo, which is called Aragonês here, Trincadeira Preta, Periquita and Touriga Nacional. But Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah also find ideal conditions here. The robust red wines are mostly cuvées. They are increasingly making a name for themselves with the fantastic wines made from the Portuguese flagship variety Touriga Nacional.

  • Vinification

Hand-picked, transported in 12-kilogram crates so that the berries are not crushed by their own weight. After an extremely careful selection on a sorting table, fermentation took place in an open lagar. The wine was foot-trodden. The Herdade do Rocim – Grande Rocim was aged for 24 months in 500-liter French oak barrels before being allowed to mature for another 18 months in the bottle.
